Drop-off composting is one way residents can put their food and yard waste to good use, instead of being sent to a landfill. This dataset contains information on locations within NYC where you can drop-off your food scraps to make compost, not trash. All food scraps are processed locally at community scale compost sites.
Before visiting a food scrap drop-off site:
• Confirm that they are open and accepting food scraps.
• Review open hours listed.
• See what items are accepted.
Accepted at food scrap drop-off sites:
• Fruits, vegetables, and eggshells
• Coffee, tea, and nuts
• Dried flowers and houseplants
• Bread, grains, pasta
Not accepted at food scrap drop-off sites:
• Meat, fish, and dairy
• Pet waste and kitty litter
• Pressure-treated plywood, lumber, or sawdust
• Clean paper, glossy paper, or cardboard
• Metal, glass, or plastic
• Medical waste, diapers, and personal hygiene products
• BPI-certified compostable plastic products

To reduce needless waste and increase diversion of reusable material from landfills, the NYC Department of Sanitation established donateNYC in 2016. donateNYC helps New Yorkers give goods, find goods, and do good, with tools that make it easy to donate or find used goods.
By donating and reusing goods instead of discarding them, New Yorkers can greatly reduce waste, conserve energy and resources, save money, and help provide jobs and human services for New Yorkers in need. donateNYC is an essential part of NYC’s Zero Waste Goals.
donateNYC also provides vital support for New York City’s reuse community, helping nonprofit organizations and local reuse businesses increase and promote their reuse efforts.

On November 20, 2019, Mayor de Blasio signed into law LL199 of 2019, requiring the establishment of Commercial Waste Zones throughout New York City. The result of years of planning, analysis, and stakeholder engagement by DSNY, the Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) program will create a safe and efficient commercial waste collection system that advances the City’s Green New Deal and zero waste goals while providing high-quality, low-cost service to NYC businesses. For more information, see: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/resources/reports/commercial-waste-zones-plan. The zone map did change slightly after DSNY adopted final rules in February 2020: https://rules.cityofnewyork.us/sites/default/files/adopted_rules_pdf/cwz_map_final_rule_-_2-7-20_-_legal_10594369.pdf. Pre-COVID, DSNY was expecting to release the RFP for servicing the zones in May 2020 and enter into the long-term contracts in early 2021. With the enormous disruptions to commercial establishments and the carting industry from the pandemic and economic shutdown, the program is on an indefinite pause until the industry is able to start recovering and stabilizing.
The zones were adopted by final rules in February 2020. DSNY does not expect to change them for at least the ten year term of the commercial waste zone contracts. It would take a new rule making to change the boundaries.

Locations and types of refuse litter baskets tracked by DSNY
Data is collected by DSNY in order to track basket locations.
Data is collected through periodic surveys by field personnel. DSNY digitizes the locations of litter baskets using GIS software.
Each record represents the approximate location, ownership, and physical type of a single refuse litter basket.
The data can be used as an approximate assessment of the locations of litter baskets tracked by the Department of Sanitation in NYC.
"Litter basket locations are subject to frequent change, for reasons that include but are not limited to: litter basket damage, nearby construction, graffiti, or regular illegal use of basket for household or commercial waste. There is often a lag time between a change in basket type or location and the reflection of that change in this dataset.
This dataset includes information of BID-owned and Privately-owned litter baskets. Non-profit and private entities wishing to place a litter basket on a public street must receive permission from the Department of Sanitation. Location data for these baskets may be less accurate than for baskets that are owned by DSNY.
This dataset does not track public litter baskets placed by other City, State, or Federal agencies, notably including the NYC Department of Parks. Recycling baskets are also not tracked in this dataset."
